Abstract
A water-resistant flowable explosive composition comprises by weight not more than 60% alkali metal nitrate, 10-85% ammonium nitrate, 5-40% particulate flake aluminium, 5-25% water, and 0.2-1.5% of a gelling or thickening agent. The aluminium has a size distribution of 60-80% of 4-50 mesh and the balance 50-150 mesh and a thickness distribution of 5-10% up to 1 mil, 10-94% 1-10 mils, and the balance 10-30 mils. An aluminium alloy containing at least 60% aluminium may be used instead of the aluminium. A water-miscible organic liquid may also be present; examples are methanol, propanol, butanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, formamide, and mixtures thereof. The gelling agent may be guar gum which may be cross-linked using sodium dichromate solution, or a saturated solution of ammonium nitrate in ammonia, in an amount such that the resulting explosive composition is pliable and gelatinous. For use in bore-hole blasting operations, the explosive may be placed in polyethylene bags. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 947,045.
