Abstract

Coated foamed polystyrene sheet material is produced by extruding and simultaneously expanding expandable polystyrene to form a foamed sheet and subsequently applying to the surface of the sheet a firmly adherent layer of a flexible non-tacky material in such a way that substantially no shrinkage of the sheet occurs. The flexible non-tacky material may be a macromolecular material such as a polymeric material that will form a film from a solution, emulsion or dispersion at a temperature below 85 DEG C. e.g. a copolymer of vinylidene chloride with methyl or ethyl acrylate, or vinyl acetate, a copolymer of vinyl acetate with methyl or ethyl acrylate, or vinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol or acetate, a styrene-methyl methacrylate-ethyl acrylate terpolymer, polyvinylidene chloride, or a plasticized polyvinyl chloride or acetate, post-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride and chlorinated polypropylene, styrene-acrylonitrile, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers, polyethylene oxide, water soluble melamine-and urea-formaldehyde resins, cellulose esters and ethers. The foamed material may have a thickness within the range of 0.007 to 0.06 inch. The coating material may be applied to one or both sides of the foamed sheet by roller coating, brush coating, air knife coating, spraying or immersion, p from an aqueous solution, emulsion or dispersion. A hydrocarbon wax may be incorporated in the coating material and may be in a proportion within the range of 2 to 30 DEG calculated on the weight of the coating material. An antistatic agent may be incorporated in the coating material and may be in a proportion within the range of 1 to 5% calculated on the weight of the coating material.
