Abstract
1,070,922. Contacting gases with liquids. THE BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 13, 1963 [Sept. 12, 1962], No. 34821/62. Heading B1R. [Also in Division F4] In a gas cooling unit in which a gas is cooled by causing a flow of the gas to break up a liquid such as water into droplets, whereby the latent heat of evaporation of the droplets is effective to cause cooling of the gas, the gas, which is preferably air, passes from an inlet pipe 17 into a manifold chamber 12 and thence through perforated pipes 14 into a cooler 11 filled with water to a level 23 said pipes being below water level, whereby sprays of water are thrown up by the air into the space within the cooler, in which space are arranged a number of inclined, parallel, perforated plates 16 on to which water spray is deposited as air passes through the cooler. Some of the water droplets evaporate so cooling the air. An air outlet pipe 18 from the cooler is connected by a by-pass pipe 20 containing a gate valve 21 to the inlet pipe 17, permitting the quantity of air passing through the cooler to be regulated and mixtures of cooled and non-cooled air to be discharged through the outlet pipe 18. The cooler may be made of metal or of a synthetic plastic material.
