Abstract

1,128,756. Cooling gases with liquids. CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP. 4 May, 1966, No. 19746/66. Headings F4K and F4S. [Also in Division B1] A hot gas quencher 6, which receives a gas stream 1 either from a refractory lined stack 2 or from an extension of the quencher connected directly to a metallic hood (23, Fig. 4) disposed above a furnace opening, consists of a horizontal and a vertical section, the latter comprising an inverted and truncated cone-like baffle 19 above which is disposed a plurality of tangential water inlets 12 and a central spray unit 10. The tangential disposition of the inlets 12 serves to produce a film of water spiralling down baffle 19 so ensuring rapid and complete quenching of the hot gas. The quencher 6 is provided on its outer surface with a plurality of channels 8 for cooling water 14, supplied by duct 15 and discharged at 17, each channel 8 having its own control valve 28. The quencher extension of the second embodiment (Fig. 4) is likewise externally cooled. If, in addition to quenching, scrubbing of the gas is desired, then an excess of water is introduced through members 10 and 12, conventional means (not shown) being provided for separating the gas, leaving via outlet 20, from either water vapour alone or from water vapour and excess water with entrained particles therein. Any other suitable coolant may be used.
