Abstract
1,070,460. Locomotives; railway carriages. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Nov. 16, 1965, No. 48679/65. Headings B7H and B7L. A railway vehicle 10 has two power plants 11, 12, e.g. diesel engines; located adjacent opposite ends of the vehicle, the plant 11 being adapted to drive a pair of wheels 18 (18<SP>1</SP>) at the end of the vehicle remote from the plant 11 and the plant 12 being adapted to drive a pair of wheels 17 (17<SP>1</SP>) at the end of the vehicle remote from the plant 12, the two power plants being disposed on opposite sides of the central longitudinal vertical plane of the vehicle. The engine 11 drives a torque converter 11a output shaft 13 connected by a universal joint J to a cordon shaft 20 connected by a universal joint J to the input shaft (21<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 2 (not shown), of a transfer gearbox 21 whose output shaft 21<SP>11</SP> is at a lower level than the shaft (21<SP>1</SP>) and is connected to the axle 22 of the wheels 18 (18<SP>1</SP>) by way of reduction gear-box 23. The engine 12 is connectedto the axle 24 of the wheels- 17 (17<SP>1</SP>) in a similar manner. Engine cooling systems 15, 16 are detachably mounted in the vehicle roof above the respective engines 11, 12. The space between the engines can be used to accommodate passengers.
