Abstract

1,070,233. Cyclone separators. ABRASIVE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Feb. 25, 1964 [Feb. 27, 1963; Nov. 9, 1963; Nov. 15, 1963], Nos. 7808/63, 44305/63 and 45178/63. Heading B2P. [Also in Division B3] Spent abrasive and detritus from a blasting chamber 10 pass through a suction tube 20 to a first cyclone separator 22. This is of conventional form having a rubber lining and is deliberately made relatively ineffective so that only the reusable abrasive is separated, the shattered abrasive and detritus passing to a second cyclone separator 24 of a high reentrant type which operates under a farily high vacuum. The shattered abrasive and detritus from the cyclone 24 pass through an intermediate box 26 to a collecting box 27, the inlet to which is offset from the vertical axis of the cyclone 24. Air from the cyclone 24 passes through an adjustable valve 30 to a multi-stage centrifugal fan 31 which produces the suction. Reusable abrasive separated in the cyclone 22 passes through upper hopper 33, flap valve 44, middle hopper 35, flap valve 45 and lower hopper 37 into an adjustable metering tube 39 extending into a recess 18 in an input pipe 16 through which air is drawn by the suction. The lower hopper 37 has apertures 46 in its well so that it is always at atmospheric pressure. When a valve 41 is open, the middle hopper is at atmospheric pressure; valve 44 is held shut and abrasive builds up in upper hopper 33; any abrasive in middle hopper 35 opens valve 45 and passes to lower hopper 37. When valve 41 is closed, middle hopper 35 is at the same pressure as upper hopper 33; any abrasive in upper hopper 33 opens valve 44 and passes to middle hopper 35; valve 45 is held shut. The valve 41 is alternately opened and shut by cycling means.
