Abstract

In a headbox of a paper-making machine having a perforated plate through which pulp flows from a feed pipe to the headbox chamber, the pipe extending transversely to the machine direction, each hole in the plate opens into a recess on the pipe side of the plate, the recess having a length down-stream of the hole in the flow direction in the pipe considerably exceeding the diameter of the hole, and having an even surface down-stream of the hole which smoothly merges into the surface of the plate thereby to avoid the possibility of any build-up of fibres on the edge of the hole at the stagnation point in the pulp flow. There may be a recess for each hole, or there may be a groove forming the recesses for a row of holes.
