A mulling machine including a crib 112 and mulling wheels 170 carried by a rotatable cross-head 126 comprises, for each wheel, an axle 172 supported by a member 174, which is pivoted about a horizontal axis 176 and includes an actuating arm 174b. The arm is biassed by a spring 180, to urge the wheel downwardly toward a base plate 116. As described, downward movement of the mulling wheels is limited by stop lugs 160a and adjustable stop bolts. A further spring 182 opposing the spring 180 may bias the wheel upwardly and the tension on the biasing spring assemblies 180, 182 is adjustable by nuts 188 threaded on rods 190, to provide between the wheels and the material in the crib a relatively constant mulling pressure, greater or less than that obtained with the free weight of the wheels. The cross head 126 includes a head assembly 160 keyed to a driving shaft 138, and a pair of support arms 162, 164 carrying outer and inner scraper-assemblies 166, 168 including blades 166a, 168a. In a second embodiment a pair of intercommunicating cribs having similar cross head and mulling wheel arrangements in. each crib, differs in that tension springs bias the wheels downwards only towards the base plates of the cribs, and a driving system rotates the cross heads in a selected synchronous relation, e.g. in opposite directions.
