Abstract

866,585. Railway vehicle draw gear. FISCHER A.G., GEORG. Nov. 11, 1958 [Nov. 21, 1957], No. 36219/58. Class 103(5). A central buffer coupling 1 having a spring buffer housing 2 provided with brackets 3, rests on a roller 4 rotatably mounted on a shaft 5A slidably supported by compression springs 6 from arms 8 mounted on the carriage structure 14. A housing 9 having an annular flange 9A is mounted on a bearing 10, and a vertical shaft 18D having a ball joint 17 extends between bushes 18C disposed in plates 18A and 18B forming part of the carriage structure. A bolt 15 passes up through the shaft 18D and is provided at its top with a centring plate 13 secured against rotation and having on its underside knife edges 12 co-operating with notches 11 formed in the top of the housing 9. The bolt 15 is biased downwardly by an adjustable spring 16 fixed thereto. In order to turn the coupling and the mounting 9, the knife edges 12 must move up the sides of the notches 11 against the force of the spring 16 which exerts a restoring and centring movement on the complete mounting. The weight of the coupling and mounting is balanced by the springs 6, 16, and slight turning movement is possible about the longitudinal axis causing the roller 4 to incline. In a modification the underside of the centring plate and the upper side of the co-operating surface of the mounting 9 are provided not with knife edges and notches but with arcuate tracks which are deepest in the middle and shallow towards their ends. In each of these pairs of tracks a ball is confined which is forced to the middle by the compression spring to centre the coupling.
