Abstract

1,066,751. Surgical infusion apparatus. SORENSON RESEARCH CORPORATION. March 22, 1965, No. 12060/65. Heading A5R. Apparatus for intravenous infusion comprises a flexible catheter 7 maintained sterile within a tubular sheath 2 and able to be inserted into a patient through a hollow needle 5, an inlet part 9 connected to the catheter projecting beyond the sheath for connection to an infusion tube 12 and to assist manipulation of the catheter. As shown, the sheath is formed with a longitudinal slit, initially closed by a seal 14 which is ruptured by the part 9 as the catheter is advanced. In alternative embodiments, Figures 7-11 (not shown), the infusion tube 12 is connected to the catheter 7 (17, 26) via an inlet part (19, 28) which projects beyond the end of the sheath. In the embodiment illustrated in Figures 10 and 11 (not shown), the catheter (26) is enclosed within a rigid sheath and is guided in its movement within the sheath by a piston (21) connecting the catheter to the combined inlet part and piston plunger (28). In the embodiment of Figures 7-9 (not shown), the sheath is also provided with lines of weakening at its ends to allow the removal and disposal of the sheath. Plastics materials such as a polyvinyl, or polyethylene, may be used for the sheath and catheter, and removable caps are fitted over the ends of the needle and the part 9 (19, 28) to maintain sterile conditions prior to use.
