Abstract

A combined anti-drain (inlet) and bypass valve is enclosed wholly within a screw-on disposable oil filter cartridge for an I.C. engine. It consists of an annular disc adapted to cover the inlet ports at one end of the cartridge and a cylindrical flange upstanding from the inner periphery of the disc and normally covering bypass ports in a short tube surrounding the outlet spigot of the cartridge. The valve member is spring-biassed to closed position. Normal oil pressure at the inlet is sufficient only to raise the valve member to a position where the inlet ports are uncovered but the bypass ports remain covered. When there is sufficient restriction in the cartridge (e.g. owing to clogging) to raise the inlet oil pressure above a predetermined value, the valve member is raised higher to uncover the bypass ports also.
