A latch 29 for a sliding window of which a sliding pane 22, 23, 24 or 25 has a flanged side rail 26, comprises a base 60 adapted to be secured to the window frame 21 and a onepiece hook portion 65 movable relative to the base between engaged and disengaged positions with the side rail, the hook portion having a portion 63 of resilient material adapted to contact a relatively stationary surface to bias the hook portion 65 into its first position. As shown, sliding window panes 22-25 are each provided with a side rail 26 and a meeting rail 27, the side rail having integral therewith a flange 30 which cooperates with the hook portion 65. In another arrangement, Fig. 7 (not shown) the hook portion is pivotally connected to a separate base portion.
