Abstract

1, 065, 280. Densitometers; measuring fluid flow. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. March 22, 1966, No.12122/65. Headings G1R and G1S. In apparatus for measuring the mass flow rate of gas a device for sensing changes in gas density comprises a casing 2 mounted in a gas duct 1, a chamber 3 filled with a gas of known properties and closed by a flexible diaphragm 5 and a further chamber 4 communicating with the duct 1 through an aperture 6 and the arrangement is such that the variation in gas density in chamber 4 relative to the gas in chamber 3 will cause movement of the diaphragm 5 to alter the setting of a servomotor 8 which operates a device recording the gas density change. In the arrangement shown the servomotor 8 alters the position of a contoured plug 10 in the throat 14 of a Venturi tube and any pressure drop recorded on a device 19 given a true indication of the mass flow of gas passing through the Venturi. An embodiment is described in which the fuel and air supply to a burner is adjusted according to the steam demand.
