A method of freezing a subterranean waterbearing formation comprises establishing a plurality of separate cavities circumscribing the region to be frozen, each cavity separately openly communicating with an introduction hole extending through the formation through which hole a liquid at a temperature below 0‹C. is fed to the cavity and with a further such hole through which liquid is withdrawn from the cavity.
