Abstract
Silicon oxynitride may be prepared and cast into bodies in which it is the principal ingredient. It is produced by reacting, at high temperature (1250-1450 DEG C.), a mixture of 47.5-->98% silicon plus 1-->50% silica plus 1-->5% BaO or CaO in an atmosphere of 94-->99% N2+1-6% O2. In special cases an organic nitrogen compound can be added to the reaction mixture and the mass can be fired in normal air atmosphere. Bodies can be formed in one of three ways:- (a) Si+SiO2+CaO to a mix, shape under pressure and heat in a controlled atmosphere to give a refractory body. (b) Si2ON2+Ceramic bond to a mix, slip cast or press to shape and heat as before to obtain a ceramic bonded, Si2ON2. (c) Si2ON2, hot press, heat, as before. Examples of bodies formed using silicon oxynitride or mixtures of silicon oxynitride plus Florida Kaolin and ammonium allyl hydroxy-carboxylate or silicon oxynitride plus Florida Kaolin+ammonium alginate, are given.
