Abstract

Refractory shapes are made by adding waterglass, mono-aluminium phosphate and/or phosphoric acid to a mixture of 20-90% grain hull ash, up to 15% clay and 5-80% of another silica-rich refractory, shaping and drying. The preferred ash is from rice hulls, whilst the silicarich refractory can be quartz, highly fired kieselguhr and fire-clay, broken silica bricks, light silica bricks and fire-clay, and clays containing combustibles for porosity.
