Abstract
1504141 Oxynitride ceramic materials; silica ADVANCED MATERIALS ENG Ltd 30 Jan 1975 [31 Jan 1974] 04646/74 Headings C1J and C1A A synthetic ceramic material is made by mixing a first compound comprising Si and O, and a second compound comprising N and a metal other than silicon, and heating the mixture to 1500‹ to 2000‹ C. in a a non-oxidizing atmosphere to produce a solid solution ceramic containing Si, the metal, O and N. The metal is preferably Al, part or all of which may be replaced by Y, Mg or Li. The first compound may be silica in gelled sol form, or may be polymethyl siloxane, polymethylphenyl siloxane, or ethyl silicate gel, which may be subjected to preliminary heating to be converted to SiO 2 . The second compound may be A1N. In a preferred embodiment polymethylphenyl siloxane, A1N, Si 3 N 4 and optionally MgO are used. The A1N may be formed by heating a powder mixture of Al (26À92%), Al 2 O 3 (43À02%) and Si 3 N 4 30À06% in a nitrogen atmosphere at less than 1500‹ C., the Al 2 O 3 and Si 3 N 4 decreasing coalescence of the Al powder to present a large surface area of Al for nitriding. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,436,311.
