[Also in Division F4] A slurry of refractory fibre and inorganic binder with water is fed to a filter mould screen to form a combustion chamber having a higher concentration of refractory fibre at its inner surface, and a higher concentration of inorganic binder at its outer surface. The combustion chamber may be moulded in layers from slurries of differing composition. The moulded combustion chamber is then dried. The refractory fibre used may contain silica, quartz, magnesia, alumina, titania and/or zirconia, and 60-95 parts by weight of refractory fibre is combined with 5-35 parts by weight of an inorganic binder such as alkali metal silicates, frit borax, aluminium phosphate, colloidal silica or alumina. Fugitive or combustible binders, low grade refractory fibres such as asbestos and combustible fibres such as cellulose may be included in the slurry stock to give a lightweight combustion chamber. Glass fibre may be included in the slurry to give a denser inner surface after initial firing and to avoid smoking when the chamber is first put into use.
