Abstract
Phosphate pellets are produced by spraying crude phosphate powder placed on a granulating plate with an aqueous suspension or pulp which contains finely divided solid matter and also dissolved substances acting as a binder and then drying, hardening and baking the green pellets. The solid matter is e.g. electrofilter dust obtained in electrothermal production of phosphorus. The dust contains water-soluble alkali metal phosphates and from it an aqueous suspension containing 25 to 30% solid matter and up to 5% dissolved phosphate is produced and sprayed on to the crude phosphate. A bentonite suspension containing 25 to 30% bentonite and an added quantity of up to 2.5% soluble alkali metal phosphates may be sprayed on to the phosphate, simultaneously with the dust suspension, either mixed with the latter or sprayed on to the centre portion of the plate while the dust suspension is sprayed near to the rim. Similarly an aqueous phosphate suspension, of the type obtained from wet dust removal means used in phosphate dressing, containing about 30% phosphate and up to 2.5% added soluble phosphates may be sprayed simultaneously with the electrofilter dust suspension. In another embodiment, a working suspension containing electrofilter dust and the aforementioned bentonite and phosphate suspensions is used, optionally together with waste products from condensed phosphate manufacture. The water soluble alkali metal phosphates used, except those contained in the electrofilter dust, are sodium phosphates, metaphosphates, pyrophosphates, tri - polyphosphates or higher condensed phosphates.
