Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1061766/C2/1> (wherein Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom, a straight or branched chain C1- 5 alkyl group, a phenyl group optionally substituted by a halogen atom or a nitro or C1- 5 alkoxy group, an aralkyl group, a nitro group, a cyano group, a hydroxy group, a C1- 5 alkoxy group, an aliphatic or aromatic acyl group, a C2- 6 alkoxycarbonyl group, an amino group, a C1- 5 alkylamino group, a di-(C1- 5 alkyl)-amino group or an aliphatic or aromatic acylamino group, n is 1-3 and when n is 2 or 3 the Y substituents may be the same or different, and R is a C1- 5 alkyl group) are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1061766/C2/2> (wherein X is a halogen atom, a C1- 5 alkoxy group or a tosyloxy group) with a compound of the formula <FORM:1061766/C2/3> The product may be isolated as the free base or a salt thereof (e.g. the picrate).
