Abstract

1,060,825. Road cleaning apparatus. JOHNSTON BROTHERS (ENGINEERING) Ltd. and A. D. COLLINS. Nov. 21, 1963 [Aug. 21, 1962], No. 32081/62. Heading E1G. A suction refuse nozzle, mounted on wheels and drawn along with a vehicle, has means producing air pulses which are superimposed on the air stream induced by the suction conduit. A refuse collecting vehicle has a suction pipe 32 terminating in a substantially rectangular nozzle having side, 13, and end, 14, walls from which depend rubber walls 16. The forward part of the nozzle is shaped as a half cylinder 11 which houses a paddle having two rubber or like blades 30 driven by a chain from wheels 21 at increased speed. The refuse passes through the paddle which forms pulsations in the suction air stream when the paddle alternately places the conduit 31 into and out of communication with the atmosphere.. In other embodiments, the paddle is located at the rear of the nozzle and rotates in the opposite direction, sealing the conduit by cooperation with a horizontal flap or inwardly projecting conduit part. The paddle blades may be hinged off centre of their hub and held by tension springs against clearance adjusting screws.
