Abstract
1,060,132. Boots &c. BOSTIK Ltd. March 25, 1964 [March 26, 1963], No. 12531/64. Heading A3B [Also in Division B2] An outsole 14 is bonded to a shoe bottom by applying thermo-plastic, solvent free, synthetic resinous adhesive composition in molten condition to the margin of the outsole 14, the adhesive being applied in spaced apart areas e.g. stripes 10, cooling the adhesive, subsequently reactivating the adhesive to molten condition by heat, heating the shoe bottom, positioning the shoe and sole together and then pressing the shoe and sole together and allowing the adhesive to cool. The stripes are at least 0.015 inches in thickness and the spacing between the stripes is such that, when the adhesive is spread uniformly over the margin, it will be 0.010 inches thick. Preferably the stripes are between .025 and .06 inches in thickness, .025 and .10 inches in width and are spaced apart a distance from two to four times the thickness of a stripe. Suitable adhesives are polyesters, polyesteramides, polyurethanes, polymers of vinyl alkyl ethers and polymers and copolymers of alkyl acrylates and methacrylates. When the sole is of rubber it may be coated with a primer before applying the adhesive. The shoe bottom and sole are heated in a heating device (35, Fig. 3, not shown) which has a radiant heater 36.
