Abstract

1,016,493. Laminates. BOSTIK Ltd. June 27, 1962 [June 30, 1961 (2)], No. 24599/62. Heading B5N. [Also in Division A3] A method of bonding two surfaces wherein there is provided on one only of the two surfaces an adherent layer of thermoplastic adhesive which is substantially free from volatile solvent and transparent to radiant heat, comprises directing radiant heat against the layer of adhesive to heat the surface underlying the layer to soften the layer, heating the second surface and pressing it against the adhesive layer to squeeze said layer into intimate contact with the two surfaces and cooling the adhesive to a solid condition. The method is exemplified by the bonding of a shoe sole (to which adhesive has been applied) to a shoe bottom. Specified adhesives are linear polyesters, polyesteramides, stereo specific catalysed polymers of vinyl alkyl ethers, polymers and copolymers of alkyl acrylates and methacrylates and linear thermoplastic polyurethanes, many being exemplified.
