The upper of a boot or shoe is given the appearance of suede by applying adhesive to the outer surface of the upper and then coating the upper with flock, e.g. under the influence of an electrostatic field. The invention can be applied to suede shoes to renovate an upper whose suede surface has been worn down, but can also be applied to uppers of any material.
