Means for crushing large coal on a face conveyor 36 comprises a crusher roll 42 carried by an overhung shaft extending over the conveyor from a housing 33, mounted to pivot about an axis parallel to the conveyor 36 on a bracket fixed to one side of the frame of the conveyor. As described, the crusher housing 33 is hinged at 35 on a bracket 34 bolted to one side member of the conveyor frame which is mounted on skids 37. A motor (38, Fig. 7) in the housing 33 drives the shaft via a fluid coupling (39) and gear box 41, Fig. 6. In operation, the housing 33 rests on the flat upper surface of the bracket 34 so that coal lumps exceeding a predetermined size are broken by pick teeth 43 on the rod, which is loaded by the weight of the motor. The crusher roll can yield upwardly about the hinge and is damped by a hydraulic ram 44, which serves for moving the housing to adjust its position. After adjustment stop blocks of the required height are located between the inner side of the housing and the bracket to limit movement of the crusher roll. The hinge may be a piano type, or one having vertically-spaced holes (27, Fig. 4,) for adjustment of the roll height. Blocks (32, Fig. 5) may be used alone to set the crushing roll height.
