A concrete block moulding machine comprises a wheeled chassis 10 on which are mounted hydraulic rams 18 the piston-rods 19 of which are detachably connected to a support 23 which holds an open-bottomed mould box 24, adapted to seat on the ground, and a transverse beam 37 carrying a series of tamping members 38. Concrete is introduced into a hopper 33 and is fed to the mould box 24 as it rests on the ground, which thus forms one face of the moulded block. A motor 28, resiliently mounted as at 30, then operates a vibrator 27 which vibrates the mould support 23. A lever 40 is then actuated and, through linkages 35, 36, the beam 37 is lowered and the tamping members 38 enter the compartments of the mould box and tamp the concrete. When the concrete is partly set the rams 18 raise the mould box clear of the blocks, the action also raising the tamping members and restoring the linkage 35, 36 to locked position. The ground clearance of the chassis 10 is sufficient for it to be wheeled away clear of the cast blocks, which remain on the ground. In a modification, downward movement of the ram piston raises the mould box, through an arrangement of ropes and pulleys.
