Abstract

[Also in Division E1] In a short wall mining installation in which mining tools 5 are caused to circulate or reciprocate by a closed loop haulage means 4 moving in a vertical plane, the guide means 24 for the tools and the haulage means are mounted on floor-supported sections 1 that are so coupled together that the sections are substantially rigid when under forces acting towards at right-angles to a mine face, but can flex to a limited extent when subjected to force in the opposite or in a vertical direction. The lower part of each section comprises a hollow rectangular box that at the rear is coupled to adjacent sections by bolts 15 and forked interlocking members 16. Attached to the front of each section is the trough unit of a scraper conveyer 2, and to the front of the troughing is secured a length of guide rail 24 along which the lower run of mining tools 5 are guided. Extending up from each section are tubular supports 20, 21 for beams 22 supporting lengths of guide rail 24 for the upper run of mining tools. Some of the supports are axially adjustable to allow of adjustment of the upper run of the mining tools. An additional pick-carrying endless chain may be mounted on the forward supports vertically mid-way between the upper and lower runs of the tools 5. On the haulage means of the mining tools being excessively loaded contraction of a telescopic section of the conveyer trough occurs and this movement actuates levers 72 (not shown) to operate control means 70 (not shown) of the drive motor of the mining toolcarrying haulage means to regulate the speed of the motor.
