An automatically temperature control system comprises a heat transfer damping device interposed between an object to be heated and the heating means, the heating means being thermostatically controlled, means being provided to eliminate the effect of the damping device during the initial heating period so as to allow the object to be rapidly brought up to the temperature at which it is desired to maintain the object. The provision of the damping device reduces the effect on the object of the operating differential of the thermostat controlling the heating means. The invention is described in conjunction with gas chromatography and a large number of embodiments are described.
