Abstract

During tunnelling in water bearing ground by means of a shield 1 having a transverse wall 12, a cushion 6 of thidotropic liquid is maintained between the ground and wall. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the liquid supplied by one or more pipes 3 is retained by a member 5. Soil and water displaced by the liquid pressure are removed by an adjustable tube 9 which may contain a conveyor. After the excavation of a quantity of soil and water the shield is advanced by jacks 10, surplus liquid being removed through the pipes 3. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 a rotatable radial arm 15 carries a bucket 16 having a pivoted scraper 17 and reciprocable on the arm. Material discharged from the bucket passes through a crusher 19, and may be separated in a centrifuge so that liquid may be returned to the cushion through the pipes 3.
