A concrete article 14 is post-tensioned by means of a system comprising an annular anchor plate 18, a perforated thrust plate 13, inner and outer spacing cylinders 8 and 11, a female cone 3, a conical iron shell 5, a male cone 7, and a bolt 1 for connecting the system to a jack (not shown). The cone 3 is pulled out by the jack, pulling cylinder 8 and hence cylinder 11 with it, and cylinder 11 is then screwed back into contact with the thrust plate 13, which is pressed against the anchor plate, deforming a perforated rubber packing 20. The pre-formed duct 15 is grouted up via a tube 16, and the cable comprising twelve rods 6, is burnt off.
