Abstract
<PICT:1058080/C4-C5/1> Powdered coal is fed to a bunker 3 which is at high pressure (15 to 30 atoms.) from a container 1 by one or more vessels 14 which are sealable top and bottom, e.g. by gate valves 8, 9, the vessels 14 being movable laterally between the parts 1, 3, e.g. by intermittent rotation about a shaft 2. The vessels 14 are adapted to be sealed to the bunker 3 and to a hollow cylinder 4 which contains a reciprocable rod 13 carrying a ram 131. The sealing connections between the parts 14 and 3, 4 comprise co-operating annular grooves in the sealing faces of the parts, Fig. 3 (not shown), the grooves in 3, 4 each communicating with an annular chamber housing an annular piston responsive to controlled fluid pressure on both faces, whereby an annular sealing member carried by the piston may be made to enter or be retracted from the grooves in the face of the vessel 14. A spring-actuated annular seal 12 bears in a groove 11 in the ram 131. To discharge a vessel 14, the sealing connections with 3, 4 are made by operating the pressure fluid and the valves 9, 10 are withdrawn to allow the coal dust to enter the bunker 3. The valve 8 is then opened and the ram 131 depressed to force back gas into the bunker, before closing the valves 9, 10.
