A method of producing absorbent fibrous material suitable, for example, for use in catamenial appliances comprises subjecting a wet surface of compacted fibrous sheet material to intermittent pressure applied by means of a plurality of gas streams impinging intermittently on the surface of the sheet, so that a material is produced having a permeable facial layer with small zones which are more compacted and other small zones which are less compacted than an interior less permeable layer. The interior layer may lie between two facial layers the outer surface of one of which may be treated, e.g. with resin, paraffinic hydrocarbon, silicone or other water proofing compound to render the surface impermeable to liquid. Pulp sheet 1 is wetted on both surfaces by sprays 10 and is fed between travelling wire mesh belts 2 which serve to interrupt the passage of streams of air directed at the two surfaces of the sheet. Nozzles 3 carried by reciprocating arms 5 and supplied with pressurized air by tubes 14 supply the streams of air which tend to displace the fibres of the facial layer from between the wires of the wire mesh and to compact the fibres together under the wires. The treated sheet material is dried by means of a drier 4 and suitably folded or stacked. In an alternative arrangement wet pulp sheet is fed directly from apparatus in which the sheet is deposited to the section of apparatus in which it is subjected to the gas streams thus eliminating the need for sprays 10.
