Abstract

1371863 Rearranged fibrous web; stretching fabric JOHNSON & JOHNSON 18 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 38658/72 Headings D1R D1S and D2B The fibres of a web are rearranged into areas of greater and lesser or even zero density, the web is then stretched transversely and the fibres then subject to a second rearrangement. The rearrangements are accomplished by known apparatus e.g. as shown by passing web 13 supported upon a belt 11 having 900 to 50,000 openings/sq in around a drum 10 having uniform openings of 1/32 in diameter through which issues water supplied by banks of nozzles 12. A mechanical rearranging means (D, Figure 4, not shown) comprises a rotating cylinder (56) having on its outer surface a plurality of needles (57). The web is moisted by a pair of wet-out rolls, pressed into contact with cylinder 56 by a reciprocating brush (60) and rearranged under the combined action of needles (57) and the soft bristles of rotary brushes (65-68) adjacent the surface of cylinder (56). A third rearranging means (F, Fig. 4, not shown) comprises a plurality of nozzles which spray water onto the web whilst it is supported by a foraminous endless belt which runs over a suction box. Different apparatus may be used for the two rearranging steps. The web is preferably transversely stretched uniformly across its width by 50 to 150% of its original width. As shown the spreader B comprises extensible coil springs 30 secured between disks 31, 32 disposed at an angle to each other. Alternatively the web may be spread by a tenter frame (Fig. 5, not shown) or a bow spreader. The transverse spreading produces a longitudinal contraction of up to 35%. The web may be air laid, wet laid or carded. The process increases the cross strength and decreases the longitudinal strength of orientated carded webs. The fibres are preferably glass, cotton, flax, viscose rayon, cellulose acetate, polyamides, polyesters, acrylics, polyolefins or combinations thereof, and have a length of “ inch to 2¢ inches and a denier of 1¢. The starting web may weigh 80 to 2000 grains per sq. yd. The fabric may be bonded, dyed, or coated. Thus the rearranging fluid may comprise an aqueous or non-aqueous bonding medium. Thermoplastic binder may be applied as a powder before during or after rearranging and then fused. Adhesive may be printed on the rearranged fabric. Alternatively the rearranging treatments alone may impart sufficient coherence.
