Abstract

A method of removing water from a wet paper web comprises passing the web through the nip of a pair of press rolls while supported on an endless carrier belt which is substantially incompressible at the pressures exerted by the press rolls and which consists of two layers: a base layer which is permeable and has sufficient voidage volume to receive the water expressed from the paper web and a barrier layer which contacts the paper web and which is sufficiently permeable to allow the water to be forced therethrough into the base layer but is of sufficiently low permeability to prevent or restrict return flow of the water from the base layer into the paper web. The fibres of the carrier are selected or treated to have the property of not absorbing water, the carrier comprising e.g. nylon or polyester yarns. The barrier layer may comprise the nap raised from a woven fabric by buffing or may be a separate woven fabric united to the base layer by heating, sewing or glueing. Alternatively the two layers may be united as one fabric in the weaving process. The barrier layer may be treated, e.g. with certain fluorocarbons, silicones, long chain nitrogen compounds, zirconium waxes or thermosetting p resins, to increase the wetting angle of the surface in relation to water and thus to reduce its permeability. The paper web is separated from the carrier felt immediately after the nip of the press rolls to minimise the time available for rewetting of the paper. The carrier felt may be cleaned by a water shower and dried by means of a suction box, an air jet and/or by passage around a small diameter roll causing centrifugal throwout of water.
