Abstract

1,057,372. Lubricating. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. March 17, 1964 [March 21, 1963; Feb. 26, 1964], No. 11305/64. Heading F2A. [Also in Division F1] In a rotary-piston engine of the n and n+ 1 lobe type, radial sealing strips 16 . . . 20 slidably lodged in a stationary casing for the piston 1 are periodically fed with lubricating oil through a radial conduit 23 in a lobe 3 of the piston. Oil is supplied to conduit 23 through conduits 24, 25 in a power-output shaft 7 and an eccentric 6 carrying the piston, respectively, conduit 25 being located in the eccentric such that oil flows, through conduit 23 whilst it passes a sealing strip. The sealing strips are thereby fed with oil in sequence as the piston rotates. Lobe 3 is one of the lobes of the piston which is not subjected to high pressures during " compression " and " expansion " phases of the working cycle of operations, Fig. 10 (not shown). The outlet end of conduit 23 may comprise a plurality of openings, each of which may contain a flow restricting orifice or jet. Alternatively, an orifice or jet may be lodged in conduit 23 behind a single outlet opening, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), or the said plurality of openings. Conduit 25 in the eccentric may contain a flowregulating valve, Fig. 11 (not shown), comprising a ball (32) biased to a closed position by a compression-spring (33) and a seat (31) containing one or a plurality of narrow by-pass passages (35), the valve being opened by centrifugal action at high speeds so that the pressure of the oil remains substantially constant with changes of speed. Alternatively, the valve may be of the needle type, Fig. 12 (not shown). The oil may be supplied to conduit 24 by the lubricating system for the bearings (not shown), or it may be supplied by a separate source. A further conduit 23<SP>1</SP> may be provided in a lobe similar to lobe 3 to increase the flow of oil to the sealing strips.
