Abstract

1,057,350. Making electrical connections; Jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. Dec. 10, 1965 [Dee. 28, 1964], No. 52441/65. Headings B3A and B3Q. [Also in Division B8] Lengths of insulated wire 24 having a bared end are passed from a machine 22 (Figs. 1 and 7, not shown) through a notch 32 in a plate 30 into tubes 38 carried by plates 36a-36e (Fig. 1). The plate 36a has peripheral notches 56 cooperating with a spring-loaded pawl 48 and during each dwell period as the pawl is retracted, the plate 36a is held stationary by a spring- loaded plunger 68 engaging in a hole 60. At the station A, a wire driving device 50 passes air under pressure through the tube 38. The wire 24 moves up to an abutment and is thereby axially located relative to the tube 38. The abutment is disengaged and at the station B a further driving device 50 positions the wire relato crimping and shearing means. A crimping die 136 crimps a ferrule 130 over the bared end of the wire and a ferrule 128 over the insulation while a blade 132 shears the connector from a strip 120 thereof. At the station C, a third driving device 50 ejects the wire 24 into a trough 26 (Fig. 1). In a modification, connectors are fixed to both ends of the wire in apparatus wherein the conveyer comprises tubes carried in brackets on a chain driven by sprockets (Fig. 8, not shown). The apparatus includes the necessary wire driving devices, abutment, crimping and shearing means mounted on the opposite side to those referred to above.
