Abstract

1279778 Crimping connectors to conductors AMP Inc 18 Dec 1970 [7 Jan 1970] 60371/70 Addition to 1150390 Headings B3A B3Q and B3W A plurality of electrical connectors, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), are crimped simultaneously to wires by apparatus comprising a device for severing a plurality of the connectors simultaneously from a strip of connectors, and two pairs of jaws for gripping and feeding the severed connectors from a severing station to crimping anvils, the pairs of jaws also being relatively movable to accommodate the difference in spacing between the connectors on the strip and the crimping anvils. Thus, widely-spaced connectors may be fed in pairs to closely-spaced anvils for crimping to twin wires, Fig. 16 (not shown), which are separated by a wedge 34, some of the teeth of the connectors penetrating the insulation and others extending through the insulation into the conductor. The strip of connectors is fed through a guidechannel 78, Fig. 3, beneath a drag-plate 80, by a tooth 88, Fig. 6, which is pivoted on a slide 98 and may be withdrawn from a feed-hole (10, Fig. 1) in the strip by means of a handle 106. A pneumatic cylinder 188, Fig. 10, advances the feed-slide 98 against a return spring 104 and has a piston-rod connected to a bar 110 which carries a screw 109 for engaging the slide 98. The bar 110 has abutments 176, 178 projecting into openings 180, 182 in carriages 150, 152 for the jaws 158, 160. The distance between the abutment 178 and a wall 183 of the opening 182 is greater than that between the abutment 176 and a wall 181 of the opening 180 by the difference in spacing between the anvils 28, 30 and the connectors of a strip, so that when the bar is returned to the right (Fig. 10) it moves the carriage 150 a short distance before moving carriage 152. Free motion of the carriages is resisted by spring-pressed balls (168), Fig. 13 (not shown), so that the jaws 158, 160 may be opened, against return springs 162, 164, by cams (174), Fig. 14 (not shown), on the bar 110 and abutments (172) on the jaws. The feedcylinder is controlled by valves operated by cams 46, 48, Fig. 3, on the press-ram 36 which is operated through a one-revolution clutch. Shearing.-Bridges (8, Fig. 1) securing the connectors to the carrier strip (6) are severed between the edge 120 of a shear blade 122, Fig. 7, and a stationary edge 118, the blade 122 being lowered against a return spring 124, by a screw 58 on the ram 36. A pair of plates 126, pressed by springs 128, clamp the connectors against a guide-plate 130.
