Abstract
1,057,078. Measuring surface roughness electrically. SIGMA INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd. Sept. 1, 1965 [Sept. 10, 1964], No. 37156/64. Heading G1N. [Also in Divisions G5 and H4] Surface roughness of a workpiece W (Fig. 1) is measured by a stylus 2 resiliently attached to a Piezo-electric crystal in a tubular housing 1 secured to a block 15 hinged at its centre of gravity 17 to a carriage 16. Fine adjustment of the C. G. is effected by movement of a counterweight 19. The stylus is biased downwards by a spring 18. Carriage 16 is suspended from a four bar link mechanism 23-26 pivoted to a fixed bar 22. The linkwork is initially held latched at 31. When released, a spring 20 causes the assembly to move the stylus across the length of the workpiece, the output voltage of the crystal being proportional to the surface level variations. A dashpot 21 ensures that the stylus moves at constant speed. The form bar link mechanism is gravitationally balanced by weights 32, 33 so that the apparatus may be used at any angle.
