Abstract
1,013,186. Measuring liquid level electrically. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 5817/62. Heading G1N. A liquid level detector includes a probe comprising a vibratory reed 1a, 1b connected into an oscillatory circuit and means for measuring changes in the amplitude of vibration. When the probe touches the liquid surface its vibrations are damped, and the change of amptitude may control a servomotor driving the probe so that it "hunts" about the surface. Alternatively the probe may be fixed to detect a predetermined level. Stainless steel arms are attached at their free ends to separate piezoelectric transducers 2, 3 vibrating the arms perpendicular to the plane of the V. In order to avoid errors due to the meniscus the V may be arranged in a plane at 45 degrees to the horizontal, and the amplitude of vibration made such that the tip of the V moves vertically through twice the height of the meniscus.
