Abstract
818,351. Ultrasonic testing. BAILEY METERS & CONTROLS Ltd. March 31, 1958 [April 1, 1957], No. 10570/57. Addition to 809,681. Class 118 (2). [Also in Group XXXIX] Continuous liquid level indication between limits is provided by sensing the capacitance of an ultrasonic transducer which varies with liquid level. Level of liquid 3 between upper and lower boundaries of piezo-electric transducer 4 is indicated by meter 9 energized from oscillator 5. In a further arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), range of measurement is increased by interposing a flared plate (see Group XXXIX) between transducer and tank wall. The plate may be apertured in the tank wall and ultrasonically insulated therefrom by a rubber or cork collar. Transducer 4, Fig. 6, forms part of feedback oscillator circuit of triode 31: oscillation amplitude decreases as liquid rises above the transducer's lower level giving increasing current through meter 41. Capacitors switched under thermostatic control across capacitor 35 compensate for liquid temperature variation. A magneto-strictive transducer may be used.
