Abstract
1,149,037. Gravity measuring apparatus. VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT RAZVEDOCHNOI GEOFIZIKI. Aug. 11, 1966, No. 35984/66. Heading G1W. A gravity gradientometer for measuring changes of the 'vertical gradient' of the force of gravity comprises a beam 4 supported by a torsional suspension 5 on a fixed frame 6, the beam 4 supporting weights m, m and m 1 , m 1 which are so arranged that the moment of inertia of the weights m 1 , m 1 about the rotational axis of the beam 4 equals that of the weights m, m and the centre of mass of the weights m 1 , m 1 coincides with the pivotal axis of the beam 4. A spring 9 is attached at one end to the beam 4 by rods AD, BD and at the other end to a lever 12 which is pivotally mounted on the frame 6 and which is rotatively adjusted by a spring and micrometer arrangement 15, 16. The amount of adjustment of the spring and micrometer arrangement 15, 16 to level the beam 4 at two places separated by a known vertical distance provides measurements whereby the change of vertical gradient of gravity between the two places can be calculated. The beam 4 and spring arrangement 9 &c. may be made of quartz and arranged within a casing and vacuum flask (3 Fig. 1 not shown).
