Apparatus for planishing metal strip comprises rollers 2a and 2b for drawing strip 1 from a reel 8, rollers 3a and 3b for braking the strip and thus creating tension in it, a heating chamber 6 for reducing the elastic limit of the strip such that the tension in the strip causes it to be planished, and a cooling chamber to prevent the hot strip from damaging the rollers 2a and 2b. The rollers can be faced with a synthetic rubber to increase their grip on the strip. The chamber 6 includes a fan 13 for blowing air over an electric element 14, and the cooling chamber 7 employs air cooling. The chamber 6 can alternatively comprise an oven, or rollers between which a current is passed. The strip can be straightened and trimmed before reaching the rollers 3a, and 3b and can come directly from a rolling mill. The motors 4 and 5 can be electrically coupled to control the strip tension, and the upper rollers 3a and 2a are vertically adjustable to vary the grip on the strip. In an example, a steel alloy strip containing 0À19-1À5% C, 1À1-1À25% Cr, 0À02% Va, and from 0À17-0À25% Mo, and of 1 metre width is heated to 600‹ C. to reduce its elastic limit from 125 to 25 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP> for planishing to take place.
