Abstract

1,055,716. Hydraulic brakes; hydraulic dampers. W. HARTUNG. April 2, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 13673/64. Headings F2F and F2S. In an hydraulic braking mechanism for a motor vehicle, the two hydraulically separate outputs from a single master cylinder or two master cylinders 2, 3 are connected to the wheel brake cylinders 8, 9 through a device 6 which disconnects one of the master cylinders from the wheel brake cylinders when the brake fluid reaches a predetermined pressure. In one embodiment of device 6 the output from master cylinder 3 communicates with the wheel brake cylinders via pressure chamber 111 below a piston 118, loaded by a spring 121 and a spring-loaded valve 114 so that when the pressure in chamber 111 reaches the predeter mined value the piston 118 will rise, compressing spring 121 and permitting the valve 114 to close. The movement of the piston 118 is delayed by means of an hydraulic damper comprising a piston 101 and a restriction 126 therein until the piston 101 has moved sufficient to uncover passage 124 when the movement of the combined pistons 118, 101 is unrestricted. In another embodiment of device 6 the pressure in chamber 111 is communicated to a chamber below the piston 118 via a restricted passage. The two sets of wheel brake cylinders 8, 9 may each be connected to the device 6 through an hydraulically separating pistoncylinder device.
