A push button operating device for ball point pens comprises an upper piece or cap member a formed on an annular downwardly facing surface with four equally spaced recesses s with two cam teeth between each, a lower piece or body portion b secured to the piece a by a pin v on a resilient tongue f and hole z or by gluing or pasting and having an upwardly facing annular surface formed with cam teeth oppositely disposed to the teeth in the piece a, and an intermediate piece c integral with the push button and having four laterally extending lugs C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , C 4 spaced at 90 degrees. The writing point q is secured to a tube h urged upwardly against the piece c by a spring e. The piece c is vertically slidable and rotatable about a vertical axis. When the point is retraeted, the lugs rest in the slots. When the button is depressed, the lugs move out of the slots against the teeth of the piece b, the piece c being rotated clockwise through ¢ tooth pitch, and on release of the button the teeth of the piece a produce a further such rotation, the lugs resting on the latter teeth with the point projected. On a second depression and release, two further inch rotations are produced, the lugs returning into the slots. The number of lugs and recesses may alternatively be three, with six teeth. The piece c may be formed in two relatively rotatable parts. The pieces may be pressed from synthetic resins. The pieces a and b are in contact in an inclined plane m-n.
