Abstract
1,052,689. Nitrided alloy steel. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. Nov.11, 1965 [Aug. 31, 1964], No. 35544/64. Heading C7A and C7U. A steel containing in percentage by weight W 15 - 20 Cr 3 - 6 V 0À8 - 1À5 C 0À5 - 1 the balance being iron and normal incidental constituents is hardened and is then subjected to a gaseous nitriding process at 500‹-560‹C for a period of 10 to 72 hours. Hardening may be effected by air-cooling from 1260‹-1300‹C followed by one or more tempering treatments at 560‹-590‹C for at least 1 hour, while nitriding is preferably carried out at 510‹-530‹C with ammonia gas. Use of the process for producing ball and roller bearing races, wear sleeves, toothed gear wheels, turbine blades and other machine parts is referred to. Examples of incidental constituents which may be present are Si‹ - 0À5 Mn‹ - 0À5 S‹ - 0À06 P‹ - 0À04 Mo<SP>0</SP> - 1 Co<SP>0</SP> - 1À5
