Abstract

A method of heat treating a steel pin and bush for a transmission chain comprises forming a diffusion alloy with at least one other metal on the surfaces of the members, carburizing the alloy surfaces, heating and quenching the members to form globular carbides in the surface layers and cause the remainder of the members to attain a martensitic structure.. The carburizing may be a carbon-nitriding process and the heat treatment may comprise heating in an inert atmospheree at 700 DEG C. for 2 hours, then raising the temperature rapidly, e.g. 10 DEG C. per minute, to 920-950 DEG C. and quenching. The alloying elements and the amounts in which they may be used are as follows: Mn. 10-15% Si. 60-70% B, 4-5% Cr, 50-60% W, 50-60% Mo, 30-40% Ta, 25-35% V, 25-35% Ni, 50-60% Co, 15-25% Zr, 20-30% Ti, 30-40% U, 1-2% and Be, 5-10%.
