Abstract
1,049,596. Axial-flow fans. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. June 14, 1965 [July 10, 1964], No. 28493/64. Heading F1C. [Also in Division F4] In a vehicle, air is driven through cooling and heating heat exchangers 11, 12 by fans 3, 4 which are driven by a motor 1 through clutches. As illustrated, each clutch comprises an armature plate 9 rotating with the motor shaft 2 and, on energization of an electromagnet 10, engaging a plate 6 carrying the fan blades. The plate 6 is carried by a ball bearing 5 on the motor shaft and the armature plate 9 is connected to the motor shaft by a flexible spider 8. The clutches may be controlled automatically in accordance with temperature. A fresh air inlet 19 is controlled by a flap 15 which also controls the admission of recirculated air to the fan 4. Air from the heat exchanger 12 is passed to windscreen demisting passages and to a flap controlled passenger compartment outlet 20. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the electromagnetic clutches are replaced by sprag clutches operating in opposite senses and the motor is reversible to operate either one of the fans.
