Abstract

1,254,691. Thermal storage heaters. SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 13 Dec., 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 52130/67. Heading F4U. The impeller of a thermal storage heater is connected to receive both cold and heated air and the impeller motor is arranged to be traversed by the cold air stream. As shown, the heater has an air inlet chamber 15, a valve 14 for controlling the amount of air admitted from the chamber to a system of passages 4, 3, 5 in heat exchange with the storage core 1, air impeller 6, 7 driven by an electric motor 13, and an impeller casing 8 having an inlet 9 for cold air from chamber 15, an inlet 10 for heated air from passage 5 and an outlet 11 for the combined air streams. Outlet 11 communicates with a mixing chamber 12 having an outlet which communicates either directly or via ducts with a space or spaces to be heated. Valve 14 may be manually or thermostatically controlled. The impeller has two portions 6 and 7 separated either by an imperforate plate or by a spoke system radiating from a hub on a shaft 19. The motor may drive the impeller via a belt and pulley system, the two impeller portions may be spaced apart and of unequal size, a unitary impeller may be employed and the impeller casing may be formed with baffles to promote mixing (Figs. 2-7, not shown). In further modifications axial flow fans are employed (Fig. 8, not shown) and valve 14 controls inlet 9 as well as passage 4 or is supplemented by a further valve for controlling inlet 9 (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 11 (riot shown) valve 14 is arranged in a cold-air by-pass duct leading to a mixing chamber from which the mixed air streams are ducted to the two inlets of the impeller; a relatively small amount of air is drawn directly into one impeller inlet from the inlet chamber to cool the impeller motor.
