Abstract

1,048,573. Machinery guards; universal Joints. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. Aug. 23, 1963 [Aug. 23, 1962], No. 33511/63. Headings F2J and F2U. [Also in Division B1] A shaft arrangement comprises an input shaft in a first non-rotary housing, an output shaft in a second non-rotary housing, a detachable coupling between the two shafts, a detachable coupling between the two housings, and a single bearing free in a spherical seating in the second housing to journal the output shaft. As applied to a portable domestic mixing machine, a motor-driven input shaft 7 carries a sleeve 12 having axial slots 14 at its end to receive a cross-piece 11, e.g. a pin at the end of a spring 13. The end of the sleeve 12 has also a part-spherical socket to receive freely the part-spherical end 10 of a universal joint member 6, a transverse slot across the partspherical end of the universal joint member engaging over the cross-piece 11 in the sleeve. The universal joint member 6 is secured by a pin 9 to an output shaft 4 journalled at its remote end by a spherical bearing member 5 in a detachable non-rotary housing 3. A non- rotary housing 1 surrounding the input shaft 7 supports the housing 2, the two being connected by a bayonet-and-socket joint. In the engaged condition, a spring 16 biases a cupshaped member 15 slidable in the housing 2 against a flange 19 in the housing 1, an outer sealing ring 18 engages a shoulder on the housing 2, and the two shafts 2, 4 are drivingly connected through the universal joint 6. To disconnect the coupling, the housing 2 is turned relatively to the housing 1, from which latter it can then be withdrawn, the spring 16 pushing the cup-shaped member 15 upwards so that an inner sealing ring 17 contacts the universal joint member 6 to support the output shaft 4 centrally of the housing 2. At the same time, the slot at the end of the universal joint member 10 disengages from the cross-piece 11 in the sleeve 12. To reconnect the coupling, the housing 2 is pushed up into the housing 1 so that the flange 19 is engaged by the cupshaped member 1, which releases the output shaft 4. The part-spherical end of the universal joint member 6 slides into its socket in the sleeve 12, and the slot at its end re-engages the cross-piece 11. The housing 2 is then turned relatively to the housing 1 to lock it in position.
