HOUSEHOLD-MOTOR COMBINATION.
Application filed December 80, 1825. Serial No. 78 377.
This invention relates to a household motor combination, and has for its primary object to provide a combination device, a means wherey a plurality of properly constructed devices may be actuated for performing a great number of functions, the performance of which has heretofore been necessary of attainmcnt through the medium of a similar number of separate devices or mechanisms.
In explaining my invent-ion briefly but in more concise terms, the invention aims to provide a ortable electric motor that is so constructet as to permit of the attachment with one end ofits armature shaft of a plurality of devices or mechanisms such as a meat grinder, vacuum cleaner, knife sharpener, etc. Each of said devices or mechanisms being cooperatively constructed in order to permit of their ready attachment to or detachment from the motor in question.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout all of the views: 1
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portable knife sharpener constructed including a sharpening unit, and operating unit cooperatively constructed in accordance with the inventlon.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sect-ion through the front end of the motor, and attaching end of the sharpener unit shown in Figure 1. a
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the unit attaching end of the motor.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing a meat grinder unit associated with a motor constructed in accordance with this in vention.
Figure 5 is a similar view, partly in cross section showing a drying unit associated with the motor, and I Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5, showing a vacuum cleaner unit associated with the motor.
In explaining the invention more in detail, 5 designates a relatively small and li ht electric motor secured within a frame'6, t at includes a carrying and supporting handle 7.
In carrying out my invention, the front end of the motor casing is formed with a longitudinally extending circular block 8 that has a socket 9 in its front end, and extending through which is a bore 10, through which projects the forward end of the armature shaft 11 of said motor 5, as clearly shown in Figure 2,
The front end of thearmature shaft 11 is formed with a longitudinal angular socket 12, while disposed within the socket 9 of the head 8 is an expansible helical spring 13.
In Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a unit that is adapted to be associated with the motor 5,v
the inner end of which is provided with a solid head 17 through'which extends a bore 18, and through which shaft15 extends. A socket 19 is provided at the inner side of said head for receiving a plate 2Ov formed upon said shaft which limits the outward sliding movement ofthe sleeve with res ect to the shaft.
Extending lon itu inally from the plate 20 is an angular sha t extension 21 that is adapted to be projected into the angular socket 12 of the front end of the armature shaft 11, when the sleeve 16 is disposed upon the head 8, in the manner shown in Figure 2.
The inner end of said sleeve is formed at diametrically opposed points with bayonet slots 22-22 for receiving pins 23-23 formed or otherwise provided at diametrically opposed points of the block 8, said slots and pins serving as a means of attachment of the sleeve to the head. The spring 13 within the socket 9 will engage at its forward end the head of said sleeve normally tending to force the same outwardly which will effectively bind the pins within the slots for preventing accidental disengagement of the sleeve with respect to the head.
In Figure 4 the motor unit is disclosed as having associated therewith a meat grinder unit B which includes among other well known structural elements, a horizontal sleeve 24 that is so formed at its outer end as to engage upon the block 8 of the motor 5 in a manner similar to the sleeve 16 in the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2. Extending longitudinally through the sleeve 24 of the unit B in Fi ure {1 is a grinder mecha nism operating sha t 25 that is squared at one end as at 26 for fitting into the angular socket 12 of the armature shaft-11. Directly forwardly of this squared end said shaft is journaled within a bearing that is carried by a plate 27 in the sleeve and against which contacts the forward end of the spring 13 for a purpose described in connection with the form shown in Figures 1 and In Figure 5 the unit 0 for similar assoclation with the motor is in the form of a drying mechanism, the same includingv amon other elements a sleeve 28 upon one end 0 which is a fan casing 29 within which is a fan blade 30 u on a horizontal shaft 31,othe inner end of w ich is formed so as to be engaged within the socket 12 of the motor armature shaft 11. In this instance, a heating coil 32 is provided within the casing rearwardlv of the fan blade, the 'wires a and 6 extending therefrom preferably carrying a conventional plug 0 the contact pin of which may be engaged through an opemn provided in the frame and the upper end 0 the motor handle 6 and 7 respectively, for connection with the lead in wires w and y for the motor 5. A suitable thumb switch a being provided upon the handle in order that the circuit may be made or broken to the motor and also to the coil 32 when the unit C is employed in association. with the motor.
In Figure 6 the unit D is dlsclosed as bein in the form of a vacuum cleaner, also in t is instance a sleeve 33 is included as an element of the unit, upon the forward end of which is a casing 35 within which is rotatively mounted a brush 36 and a fan 37, said fan being attached to a horizontal shaft 38 that at its inner end extends through an opening in an abutment plate 39, said end of the shaft being squared as at 40 for engagement within the socket of the armature shaft 11. I
It will thus be appreciated that I have provided a hi hly novel and useful household motor com ination wherein a plurality of units may be readily associated with or detached from a complementary constructed electric motor for obviously permitting of the operation of a desired one of the units which may be, and preferably are, of a type shown in the drawing, it nevertheless being understood that other units may be provided, and that the construction of the interconnecting means between the units and motor may be modified without departin from the spirit and scope of the appended c aim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- The combination of a motor casing having a projecting, exteriorly circular block with a longitudinal central bore therein, said block also having a forward chamber and diametrically opposite exterior pins, a motor shaft turnable in the bore of said block and having a longitudinal socket of angular cross sec; tion in its forward portion, a sleeve receiving and turnable about said block and having bayonet slots receiving said pins, a shaft journaled in said sleeve and having a portion of angular cross section sheathed in said angular socket; said sleeve abutting against said shaft, and holding the angular portion thereof in the angular socket of the first named shaft, and an expansible coiled spring disposed in the block chamber and coiled about the motor shaft and inter osed between the transverse wall of the chamber and an opposed portion of the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
RICA KRUG.
